The Portfolios of William Corey

The Temple Gardens Of Kyoto: Sanzen-In / C-152

The Temple Gardens of Kyoto

From the spring of 1979, through the summer of 1998, I spent four months of each year, in different seasons, photographing the temples and gardens of Kyoto. My concern was not to merely document the rich, cultural heritage that these gardens represent, but to pursue the inner, hidden reality, the very essence of beauty that embraces the symbolic and sacred realm of the gardeners art.

The Gardens Of Kyoto: Fumon-In / B-100

The Gardens of Kyoto

The second set of images from the Kyoto garden series made with the 8x10 view camera. If Japan can be said to have any surviving hidden treasures in this day of mass tourism, certainly these magnificent gardens hold that distinction. To visit them is certainly one of the chief pleasures of a stay in Japan's ancient capital city.

The Great Gardens of Kyoto: Sanzen-In / D137

The Great Gardens of Kyoto

The third set of images from the Kyoto garden series made with the 8x10 view camera. These gardens, reverently preserved and universally admired, stand as monuments to the skillful principles of Japanese garden and landscape art.

The Imperial Gardens of Kyoto

More than three centuries ago, when Kyoto was the capital of Japan, three magnificent gardens were created there for the imperial court . Today these three gardens-those of the Sento Imperial Palace (Sento Gosho), the Katsura Detached Palace (Katsura Rikyu), and the Shugakuin Detached Palace (Shugakuin Rikyu)-are among the most celebrated in Japanese garden art.

The Gardens of Yamagata

Yamagata Prefecture, with its soaring mountains and wide river valleys lies on the west side of Japan's Tohoku district, some 250 miles north of Tokyo. In the spring of 1995, I was invited as 'artist in residence' to the Tohoku University of Art & Design in Yamagata City. Throughout the spring and summer months I photographed many of the temples and gardens of this beautiful region with the 8" X 20" banquet camera.

Gardens Of Strange Enchantment: Sanzen-In / ND 40

Gardens Of Strange Enchantment

For 1100 years Kyoto was the capital of Japan, the seat of the imperial court and the center of Japan's traditional culture. Over the centuries, certain places in Kyoto have become renowned for their beauty at a particular season.

Autumn in Kyoto: Shimogamo Jinja / ALC-2

Autumn in Kyoto

In the fall of 1993, I began work on a series of images with the 8 X 20 camera that was later to become a hand-made, limited-edition book. The book was set in letter press type and bound accordion-style, in luxurious silk, by one of the oldest book binding families still remaining in Kyoto.

The Gardens & Cathedrals Of Tuscany: La Poderina Gate / IT-8919

The Gardens & Cathedrals of Tuscany

I made my way to Tuscany to study the context in which european environmental design had developed, to gain a glimpse of how garden designers, religious and political figures all made important contributions through the centuries.

Innisfree, America's Greatest Garden

Some ninety miles north of New York City and a couple of miles east of the small town of Millbrook, sits one of the most beautiful and unique gardens in the world: two hundred acres of woods and gardens wound around a forty acre lake cradled within hills. A unique formal garden disguised as an enchanted landscape.
