Sanzen-In

Sanzen-In (2c-106)

"Sanzen-In / 三千院 "(ND-40) in Kyoto, Japan
(京都府京都市左京区大原来迎院町)
Sanzen-in was established during the early Heian Period by Saicho. Its location was moved to the current one in 1871. The name, Sanzen-In, has been used since 1871.
It was called, among many, Kajii-Gosho/梶井御所, etc.

For nearly 30 years, William kept on capturing the changing beauty of Sanzen-in through his beloved view camera. Unless he could feel the spiritual connection to the environment, William did not take the picture. Here at Sanzen-In, William was at home. He had enjoyed the privilage of being able to arrive at the site when the gate was still closed to the public, or staying beyond the closing time. Consequently, he was able to choose the best lighting conditions for his art which happend to be either during the early in the morning or the late afternoon.

One can observe in this image one of the signature expression of William where the viewer is witnessing the moment in nature from within the structure. It is interesting to note that both the structure and the garden are man made. The different and often potentially confronting elements are harmoniously co-existing in William’s composition. The darkness of the interior of the structure can be interpreted as the womb, and we are invited to look for the daylight and the joyful expressions of nature through its colors.
