Sento Gosho

Sento Gosho (E-72)

The cobblestone beach (ariso) made up of carefully selected stones were in fact a gift of the lord of Odawara in eastern Japan. It is commonly believed that the stones were gathered along the shoreline of Odawara, individually wrapped in silk for the voyage to Kyoto and presentation to the Emperor. They were called two liter stones, for each was said to have the value of two liters of rice at the time.
