In the autumn of 1989 I spent three months photographing in the Tuscany region of Italy. Adjusted to photographing within the "boundaries" of Japanese gardens, it was a new, exciting and somewhat intimidating experience to work with such an entirely new palate.
While I had emphasized composition as the central theme of my Japanese work I was immediately drawn to the magnificent colors of the Tuscan autumn. For these three months I made photographs with the 8 X 20 camera about color.
Camera Obscura Gallery, in Denver, Colorado, presented the first and only exhibition of these photographs. It was the most successful exhibition in the galleries thirty-year history.
